Primary School PE and Sport Funding

The Government is providing additional funding, for the academic years 2013-14 and 2014-5, to improve provision of Physical Education and sport in primary schools. This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on developing the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision. Schools have the freedom to choose how this funding is to be used.

Possible uses for the funding might include:

  • hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE
  • supporting and engaging the least active children through new or additional Change4Life clubs
  • paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
  • providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport

running sport competitions, or increasing pupils’ participation in the School Games initiative
buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE and sport

  • providing places for pupils on after school sports clubs and holiday clubs
  • pooling the additional funding with that of other schools

At St Peter’s, we believe that Physical Education contributes significantly to the health and well-being of children. We work hard to develop PE through curriculum time and extra-curricular activities by providing a wide range of experiences to engage and inspire all pupils.

We ensure that all pupils benefit, regardless of sporting ability; the most able pupils have the opportunity to participate in inter-schools competitions and are signposted to local clubs.

The funding allocation for
2013-2014 is £8190
2014-2015 is £8180
2015-2016 is £8220
2016-2017 is £8220

We plan to use the funding to:

  • employ specialist teachers to deliver high quality PE lessons to children throughout the school
  • provide opportunities for professional development of teaching staff
  • provide cover for teachers to attend professional development sessions
  • assist with the cost of swimming lessons for all children
  • provide outdoor adventurous activities
  • introduce new sports and physical activities to cater for all interests
  • provide after school sports clubs
  • increase participation in sporting activities for all children
  • enable children to take part in local tournaments and competitions

We will evaluate the impact of our funding and monitor pupil participation and progress.
